Bats

Bats are the only mammal that can fly. That’s impressive because flying is really hard. How hard? Try flapping your arms 17 times in a second. Imagine doing that from dusk to dawn. Your arms would be guano.

Where as a human would have debilitating muscle inflammation, bats don’t. This is because the bat has a go-along-to-get-along immune system. Their bodies don’t so much fight infection, as tolerate it.

A bat could be infected with rabies, SARS, MERS, Ebola AND coronaviruses–and still hang 10 with its bat buds back at the roost.

Maybe the answer to defeating COVID-19 is in the bat’s quirky biology–researchers are looking… In the meantime, I’m working at doing faster jumping jacks.

Civet

The Asian palm civet is a cat-like mammal that lives in the tropical forests of Indonesia and China. Civets are mostly nocturnal and, apparently, they make an outstanding cup of coffee.

Wait—what?

Civets adore coffee cherries. After digesting the cherries, the civet poops and the beans are “harvested.” The result is kopi luwak, or civet coffee–the most expensive coffee in the world. A single cup can set you back $100.

In the SARS outbreak of 2002-03, civets carried the virus from bats to humans. Thousands of captive civets were slaughtered as a result. A better result might have been a ban on cat-poop coffee?!
